Stage set for President Pranab’s visit

President Pranab Mukherjee will be in Chandigarh on Friday from 10 am to 5 pm.

President Pranab Mukherjee will be in Chandigarh on Friday from 10 am to 5 pm. It is for the first time after becoming the President that he is visiting the city. Traffic movement is likely to be disrupted during the day.

“The roads will not be blocked unnecessarily to avoid jams. Movement of ambulances will be top priority,” said the SSP Traffic and Security,Maneesh Chaudhary. The UT Police has made security arrangements keeping the movement of ambulances as the top priority.

After landing at the airport,Mukherjee will be going to 3BRD where he will bestow the President’s colour. Following this he will move to Raj Bhawan for lunch and then towards Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) for the annual convocation. Flights to and from the city will be affected with no landing and take-off to be allowed in the morning and then in the evening.

As a precautionary measure,gate number 1 of Panjab University facing the PGI will remain closed from 2 pm to 5 pm. Also,the main gate of Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH),Sector 16 opening on Madhya Marg will only be accessible for entry for emergency purposes. The gate opening inside Sector 16 will be used as entry and exit point.

Gate number 1 of PGIMER will remain closed for public movement from 11 am to 5 pm. PGIMER attendants staff will be positioned at all the gates to assist the patients in case of any help required.

PGI holds dress rehearsal of convocation

As the tertiary care institute of the region PGIMER is all set for its convocation on Friday,efforts are being made by the authorities to ensure it is a smooth show.

Consequently,PGI authorities have issued strict orders prohibiting carrying of pen drives,cameras,mobiles and laptops during the convocation. A full dress rehearsal,in this regard was conducted at PGI on Thursday.

Announcing the stringent orders,all the faculty members,students and other staffs have been instructed not to carry any type of electronic or mechanical objects inside the auditorium during the convocation. The orders have been passed following the sour experience the PGIMER had during the MD/MS exam wherein a cheating racket was busted a few months back.

Similarly,strict instructions have been passed on to the security wing of the PGI to ensure the smooth flow of the patients and traffic during the President’s visit.

Meanwhile a final dress rehearsal was conducted on Thursday at PGIMER where repeated announcements were being made for ensuring that Friday’s event is glitch free.

Professor Ajit Awasthi,president,institutes function committee was directing the entire dress rehearsal. Director PGI,Prof Y K Chawla,Dean Prof Amod Gupta along with other senior faculty members and all the 393 students were present and enacted the proceedings of the convocation as it is to be held on Friday. Certain students complained that the gowns were ill fitting and asked for changes several times.

During the final dress rehearsal,one of the PGI staffers even played Kapil Sibal,who is slated to launch the commemorative stamp on Friday,presenting the commemorative postage stamp featuring Nehru Hospital of the PGI to the President of India.
