(Express Photo)In a late-night incident on Saturday, a high-speed Mercedes crashed and mounted the central roundabout — Matka Chowk, Sector 17, Chandigarh — narrowly averting a major tragedy.
As per police sources, the accident occurred around 12.30 am, when the luxury car, coming from the Sector 16/17 light point, lost control and rammed into the iconic traffic circle.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported as the vehicle’s airbags were deployed in time, cushioning the impact. However, the Mercedes suffered heavy damage, and the structure at the roundabout was also affected.
Responding promptly to the alert, Station House Officer (SHO) Narendra Patial of Police Station-3, along with the PCR team and the night duty officer, reached the site and took immediate control of the situation. The driver, identified as Rahul, a resident of Sector 9, was taken to hospital.
Police sources said that the driver of the car, Rahul, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He was booked under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for drink-driving and subsequently released on bail.
