The Panjab University (PU) is set to roll out a biometric attendance system for its employees soon to keep a check on their entry and exit timings.
According to varsity officials, the system is being brought in order to ensure accountability and to begin with the system will be introduced for the non-teaching employees.
The university authorities will later implement a similar system for its employees and students.
According to the officials, it has become difficult to keep a track of the employee timings solely on the basis of the manual register.
As per information from the registrar’s office, “The biometric system for attendance will also be installed in the university hostels in order to maintain an accountability in terms of student timings. For now, the system is being implemented for non-teaching employees of the university as several irregularities in timings have been noted
The biometric system will soon be installed at the administrative block of the university, wherein the staff members
will punch in their attendance using their finger print/face scanning. The biometric attendance system will provide an accurate record of every staff member’s attendance details.
Earlier, some university officials had suggested for issuing biometric identity cards to all faculty members and students of the university to ensure safety on the campus.
The suggestions were put forward during the students’ elections in August when the university security was having trouble keeping outsiders off the campus.
However, the PU website will soon have a student portal, where details of each student like attendance percentage, detailed marksheet card (DMC) and examination marks will be regularly updated.
Further, a system for updating student attendance and staff attendance online is also being developed by the university. Using a university-provided ID and password, the students, faculty members and parents will be able to view their attendance percentage online.
