With the Haryana Congress in disarray, party president Sonia Gandhi has swung into action to sort out the mess. Apart from summoning veteran Captain Ajay Singh Yadav and directing him to withdraw his resignation as Power Minister, which he did, she has also urged party leaders to not wash their dirty linen in public.
While Yadav withdrew his resignation, he used the opportunity to air his grievances against Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, to the party president. Sources said that in his 20-minute meeting with Sonia Gandhi, Yadav minced no words in telling her that the party will repeat its Lok Sabha performance if immediate steps are not taken to change course. He reportedly told the Congress president that Hooda was hardly bothered about rehabilitating senior politicians and was instead accommodating his crony bureaucrats to plum posts. On his part, an elated Yadav told The Indian Express that he was satisfied with the meeting and would continue to be part of the government as per directions of the party president. He has also begun harbouring chief ministerial ambitions.
Congress sources also said that Sonia will soon take stock of the remaining problems in the Haryana unit. The party high command is not happy with leaders at the helm of affairs in the state: Hooda, state Congress chief Ashok Tanwar and general secretary incharge of Haryana Affairs Shakeel Ahmed. Tanwar has failed to get a grip of the party after he was given command by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi before the Lok Sabha elections. The party registered its worst-ever performance in the state by losing nine of the ten seats.
The party high command has also taken note of the fact that Tanwar has dissolved all district and block level units. As a result there is nobody out in the field as nobody is sure of retaining their position. This uncertainty has led to large scale protests at the district-level.
Sources said that a few senior leaders had opposed the dissolving of the district units but their advice was not heeded.
The party high command is also keeping a close watch on the Birender Singh front. Though the veteran leader has been shunted out of the working committee, he has the support of a section of party leaders.
