Noted Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans has been appointed visiting professor at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar. This is the third time that Hans has been honored with similar fellowships. Earlier,California-based San Jose University had appointed him as the visiting professor of Sufism. Punjab University in Patiala had also conferred him with lifetime fellowship.
In these institutions, the general trend is that students choose music only to land a job. But my focus will be to produce artists. Anyone can teach or read theory, but my focus will be to instill the musical energy in my students,in the same manner my Guru instilled the energy in me, said Hans, who holds sessions twice on Sunday and Monday each.
Saying that he was greatly honoured after being appointed visiting fellow for GNDU,Hans said: The university is in the name of Guru Nanak Devji, who always held music in high esteem. Sufism and Gurubani (teachings of Gurus) are correlated and philosophically identical.
Earlier, addressing mediapersons,GNDU Vice-Chancellor Ajaib Singh Brar praised Hans for his contribution to Sufi music. A student of the universitys music department was doing her PhD Hans, said department head Dr Gurpreet Kaur.
