BJP MP from Amritsar,Navjot Singh Sidhu,on Friday moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking directions to the Punjab government and Amritsar Municipal Corporation to take adequate steps to prevent garbage being dumped in roads across the city.

Appearing on Sidhu’s behalf, senior lawyer and BJP leader Satya Pal Jain filed an application to intervene in a PIL — pending for the last six years — pertaining to garbage collection and processing in Amritsar.

Sidhu’s application was allowed after the court of acting Chief Justice Jasbir Singh directed the Amritsar Municipal Corporation commissioner to appear before it on September 18.

Sidhu alleged the agency, which was given the contract for garbage collection and processing, was not functioning and pursuing a litigation against the state government.

When asked why the MP cannot ensure that the state government reacts,Sidhu’s lawyer said: “Since the situation (of garbage collection) had gone from bad to worse,it has become necessary for Sidhu to approach the court.”
