After the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered the NHAI to demolish illegal structures along the National Highway, shopkeepers of Kalka today started work on razing the encroachments on their own. The HC had given the NHAI 48 hours to comply.

Some of the recently-constructed buildings are also being razed. Though, many shopkeepers are facing problem of labour and skilled persons to demolish the structures.

According to Ragunandan Gupta (78),he was running his shop from his childhood and never expected such a decision. Another shopkeeper,Manjit Singh, said he was allotted the shop in 1947. “How was an encroached shop allotted to me,” he wondered. Notices were given to 242 persons in November,2007 and the list was brought down to 56 later. They had moved court to avoid the demolition but were disappointed.
