Initially,it was more like testing the waters. Is the listener adventurous? Will the audience give a thumbs up to something that is not formulaic? Juggling with these questions, indipop singer Shibani Kashyap decided to give it a shot. I am not one of those singers who wait for their films to release or wait around for another album. The music is right here, right now. I wanted to add a new twist to the stream, she says.
Kashyap, along with Indo-Bahrainian rapper Earl Edgar, presented her version of the item song Sheila Ki Jawani on World Music Day last month. The second a radio channel aired it,the song became an instant hit. Following the success,Kashyap and husband-director Rajeev Roda shot the video for the same in Mumbai, uploaded it,and in the next ten days it garnered over 1,30,000 views.
Item songs usually dont have a long shelf life, and I chose this song because I simple love the way Sunidhi Chauhan has sung it. I decided to give it my interpretation, and since I love jazz,we decided to add this element to it as well, says Kashyap. The song is soft and slow, with a sensuous rhythm to it. Riding high on its success, the singer has now decided to do a trilogy of three item songs. Its Chikni Chameli next. Chameli is rustic Marathi, very regional and it would be a challenge working it the other way.
While the third track is yet to be finalised,Kashyap, who is also working on another album,is busy mulling over Balma,Fevicol,Pritam Pyaare. Balma will make for an interesting Latino version, she says. In the meantime,Kashyap is to work on a Punjabi track with Mika from her untitled album,to be released soon.
