Chandigarh:N Shashi,gymnastics coach at Sector 7 Sports Complex,have been selected coach of the Indian aerobic gymnastic team for the 3rd Asian Aerobic Gymnastic Championship to be held at Palembang,Indonesia,from October 18 to 21. The Indian team comprises of eight girtls and eight boys. Apart from coach of the team,Shashi has been given the additional responsibility of technical official of the team.
GGD SD-32 pugilists shine
Chandigarh:GGD SD College,Sector 32,Chandigarh ruled the ring by winning five gold medals out of 11 at stake and claimed the team trophy with 32.5 points in the Panjab University Inter-College Boxing (men) Championship held at PU Gymnasium on Saturday. SD College boxers,who outpunched their rivals to claim gold medals in their respective categories,were Naveen (51 kg),Surinder (57 kg),Gaganpreet (69 kg),Rajbir Singh (91 kg) and Deepinder Singh (+91 kg). Sri Guru Gobind Singh College,Sector 26,Chandigarh finished runners-up with 18.5 points. Their boxers claimed one gold and three silver medals. Subham Gulati earned gold for them by beating Ashish Singh GGD SD College,Sector 32 in the 60 kg final. DAV College,Sector 32 finished third with 11 points. They had to remain contend with a solitary gold through Subham who outpunched Sumit Hooda of SGGS College) in the 48 kg final. AS College of Khanna were fourth with a total of 9.5 points.
IGU Junior Tour golf from October 9
Chandigarh:The Chandigarh leg of Toyota Indian Golf Union (IGU) Junior Tour for selecting national champions would be held at the Chandigarh Golf Club from October 9 to 12. This year the Chandigarh Juniors event will serve as the qualifying event for Faldo Asia Finals (Nick Faldo). About 100 junior golfers will take part in the event,with two boys aged 12 to 18 competing in the 72-hole event at Chandigarh. Top two winners will participate in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Finals to be held at Mission Hills Golf Course at China in March next year. Abhijit Chadha had won the 2011 Faldo Series Asia Grand Final at the Chandigarh Golf Club. The 7-city Toyota IGU National Junior Tour tournaments are contested over four rounds of 18 holes each.
Contrasting wins for Aniket,Anitej
Mohali:Aniket and Anitek registered contrasting victories in the boy’s Under-14 and Under-12 categories in the Manav Mangal Total tennis championship being played at Manav Mangal Smart School,Phase 10,on Saturday. Aniket produced a clinical display and hammered Pranav 5-0,to enter the next round of the boy’s Under-14 category. Looking strong and confident,Aniket did not concede even a single game and fired aces past a hapless Pranav to register an easy victory. On the other hand,the match between Anitej and Angad ended in a tie-breaker,and keeping his cool in a pressure situation,Anitej managed to win the tough match. It was Anitej who took an early lead of 3-1,but Angad made a strong comeback and levelled the score at 3-all. Both the players went neck to neck till the 10th game and were level at 5-all. In the tie-breaker,Anitej played some solid groundstrokes and his big serves helped him take a lead of 4-0. But Angad fought back and levelled the score at 4-4. His dreams were short-lived as Anitej won the remaining points and emerged winner 6-5 (7-4).

Saupins-32 triumph over Mt Carmel
Chandigarh:A blistering half-century from Ramandeep (81) and superb bowling performance from Parvesh Sharma (4 for 14) guided Saupin’s School,Sector 32,to an impressive 80-run victory over Mount Carmel,Sector 9,in the Inter School Education Department cricket tournament (Under-14) played at the Government Model School,Sector 19,on Saturday. Saupin’s -32 batted first and posted 167 runs for the loss of only three wickets. Ramandeep was in top form as he accelerated the run rate with a series of boundaries. He raked up 81 runs off just 41 balls with the help of nine boundaries and three towering sixes. Shubham and Parvesh also kept the scoreboard ticking by contributing 25 and 28 runs,respectively. Chasing the target,Mount Carmel were all out for 87 runs. Rahul top-scored with 51 runs,with the help of four boundaries and two huge sixes and his knock was the only silver lining in an otherwise dull batting performance by the Mount Carmel team. Parvesh was the chief wicket-taker for Saupins with 4 for 14 runs.
Net Solutions outplay Whirlpool Ltd
Chandigarh:Net Solutions easily defeated Whirlpool Ltd by 59 runs in the ongoing CII-Tata Motors Regional Corporate Cricket Cup,being played at Chandigarh,on Saturday. Net solutions batted first and put up a total of 154 runs in 20 overs. Tushar Pahuja top-scored with 32 off 28 balls while Prashant Ojha chipped in with a quickfire 22 off just 11 balls. In reply,Whirlpool Ltd were bundled out for 95 runs. Prakash Singh (31) was the only batsman to show some resolve. Rahul Gupta and Karandeep took two wickets each. In another match,Barclays Bank defeated FCI by just one run in a nail-biting finish. Barclays Bank posted 202 runs in 20 overs while batting first. Samrat hammered a blistering knock of 90 off 51 balls while Amit Sharma chipped in with 31 off 23 balls. Rohit took four wickets for 18 runs. In reply,FCI needed seven runs off the last over but they managed to score just five runs. Kulwinder Singh scored a brilliant knock of 45 off 25 deliveries. In another match,Competent Synergies Ltd thrashed PCAC by 70 runs in a one sided match while Philips Electronics Ltd defeated Nectar Lifesciences Ltd by eight wickets.
Adesh institute athletes shine
Chandigarh:Athletes from Adesh Institute of Medical and Dental Sciences,Bathinda,returned with a rich hual of medals from the Annual All India Medical Inter Medical Youth Festival at Delhi. The team reached the semi-final and final of most of the events. Indermeet Singh of MBBS (4th yr) won gold in 800m track event while the girl’s basketball team led by MBBS student Meenu,brought home the silver medal. Notable contribution in the team was made by Rupinder,Sandeep,Harleen,Shivani,Pallav and Arman. Last year the athletes from the Institute had won gold in 100m,200m,400m relay,long jump boys and girls and football and volleyball girls.
