BJP claims to have ‘sorted out’ internal differences,to take on ‘shaky’ Congress

The BJP unit in Himachal Pradesh has decided to set aside its internal differences for the forthcoming Assembly elections as BJP stalwarts – Shanta Kumar and Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal – have decided to join hands. The leaders will be sharing the stage after more than two.

The decision was taken during the last day of the two-day BJP core-committee meeting on Himachal Pradesh on Sunday. According to sources, the leaders have decided to ‘not wash their dirty linen in public’ and pose a united face in the state.

Sources had disclosed that BJP was ‘forced’ to hold the core-committee meeting in Chandigarh and not in Shimla to ensure that attendance of Shanta Kumar. The softening of relations between the leaders comes at the heels of a close-door breakfast meeting in Kangra.

Certain policies adopted by the BJP in Himachal Pradesh have been blamed for the strained relations between the two leaders. However, the issue of carving out a new district in Kangra has been set aside as Shanta has been assured that he will be consulted before a final call is taken.

The BJP’s spokesperson in Himachal Pradesh,Ganesh Dutt, told The Indian Express that the party was discussed various topics including campaigning strategies for the forthcoming polls.

The issue of Rohru MLA Khush Ram Balnatah’s letter to Nitin Gadkari – seeking a leadership change in the party – was also discussed. It was decided that since it was a first of its kind act committed by the MLA,a lenient view would be taken. However,on the issue of the party’s MP from Kangra,Rajan Sushant, the party leaders were unanimous that he should be taken to task and punished for issuing anti-Dhumal and anti-party statements.

Meanwhile,BJP leaders disclosed that party president Nitin Gadkari might hold a party meeting in Dharamsala next week. Gadkari shall also be meeting senior BJP leaders of the state to formulate campaigning strategies.

Considering the Congress’ move of appointing former Chief Minister of Himachal,Virbhadra Singh,as its campaign incharge, the BJP is not taking any chances. The issue of corruption charges against the leader and his his wife are likely to be raked up by the BJP. A senior BJP leader said,“The people of Himachal need to be made aware of the corruption charges against Virbhadra and his wife and people need to know what kind of a leader they were supporting till a few years ago.”
