Senior PU faculty members in race for V-C’s post

With Panjab University Vice-Chancellor R C Sobti scheduled to complete his term in July,a number of senior faculty members are now in the race for the crack university post.

With Panjab University (PU) Vice-Chancellor (V-C) R C Sobti scheduled to complete his term in July,a number of senior faculty members are now in the race for the crack university post. While the search committee refused to disclose the names of the nominated members,sources confirmed that the key nominated members include Prof B S Brar,Dean University Instructions (DUI),Prof A S Ahluwalia,Dean Student Welfare (DSW) Prof B S Ghuman,Dean Faculty of Arts,and Prof R K Kohli of the Department

of Botany.

When contacted,key V-C Search Committee and PU Senate member I S Chadha said,“We are in the process of assessing the nominations. But we are in no position to disclose the names as of now. We will finalise the selection process in a couple of months.”

Prof Brar is the chairperson of Department of Arts History and Visual Arts while Prof Ahluwalia heads the Department of Botany. The other prominent nominated members include Prof D N Johar,vice-chancellor of Ambedkar University,Agra,and Prof Satpal Gautam,former V-C of Rahailkhand University,Bareilly.

While the term of current Panjab University V-C R C Sobti will end on July 21,sources have indicated that his term may be extended for a few months. With Vice-President M Hamid Ansari,who is PU’s ex-officio chancellor,scheduled to complete his term in August,it is likely that he may recommend that his successor finalise the Panjab University V-C’s selection.

Sobti will complete his six-year term as the University head this year. The new V-C’s term will be of five years,while earlier it was of years. This decision was taken at a Syndicate meeting held in January.
