Senior citizen dies in accident,family allege medical negligence

The accident took place around 10 am and at 11 am the patient was shifted to GMCH-32.

The family of the 64-year-old who died in an road accident on Friday afternoon,alleged medical negligence on the part of doctors of Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32.

“My uncle,Gurbhajan Singh,was on his way to his factory in Dera Bassi when he met with an accident. He had some minor injuries near his eyes and was immediately taken to a hospital in Dera Bassi by PCR personnel,” said Andit Mann,nephew of the deceased.

He said the accident took place around 10 am and at 11 am the patient was shifted to GMCH-32. However,the family says the doctors there did not attend to him properly.

The family alleged that not even a single senior doctor was present. “Doctors who were present at the emergency were trainees and the senior doctor came after two hours. He also did not give due attention to my uncle.”

He added around 2pm,while we were taking him for CT scan,he vomited blood. They then rushed him to emergency where he was declared dead.

Dr AK Janmeja,Medical Superintendent of GMCH-32 told Newsline,“I have not received any written complaint yet and I am not aware of any such incident.”

Contrary to this,Goldy,the deceased’s son alleged,“It is because of the medical negligence of the GMCH-32 staff that I have lost my father.” The family members also said the hospital lacked equipments like oxygen cylinders. “Doctors on duty wasted 15 minutes in arranging an oxygen cylinder. Then they struggled for another 15 minutes,as they did not know how to fit an oxygen cylinder,” Mann said.
