The Himachal Pradesh government has upgraded the security for Director General of Police (Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau) Dr D S Manhas in view of the Congress tirade against him for registering the FIR against Union Steel Minister Virbhadra Singh last year.

Top sources in the police said Manhas had been advised to take due precautions and avoid travelling without his personal security guards.

The decision was taken after the state’s security and intelligence agencies received intelligence inputs about threats to Manhas. Youth Congress and NSUI activists have been burning his effigies for what they alleged as “Manhas’s bid to prosecute Virbhadra Singh in a corruption case”. Earlier,Congress MLAs had also sent a complaint against Manhas to the Union home ministry.

Additional Director General of Police (CID) I D Bhandari confirmed that Manhas’s security has been upgraded following threat perception to his life. “It’s a decision which is taken at the highest level and on the basis of reliable inputs,” he added.

The FIR against Virbhadra Singh is based on a controversial CD released by Major Vijai Singh Mankotia in 2007.

Bhandari is now inquiring into two other CDs which surfaced recently,in which Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and DGP (Vigilance) Manhas have been caught in a conversation on phone-tapping.

The CDs have been sent to the Central Forensic Sciences Lab at Chandigarh for tests.
