The Sector-42 murder accused, who was arrested on Friday, had been keeping a track of the victim womans wealth and considering that she did not have a family to spend the money,he had believed that she possessed huge wealth, the police said.
The Chandigarh police had arrested the 23-year-old Sarwan, who belonged to Lucknow in UP,from his native village. We managed to trace him after tracking the victims mobile phone, which he had taken along, the police said.
Sarwan used to live with Manglu and his brother Desh Raj,domestic helps of Shashi Sharma, who was found murdered in her two-room rented accommodation on January 17. Manglu and Desh Raj had been working for Shashi for years and she treated them like sons, the police said. Sarwan, who did not have any criminal record, had come to the city in search of work in last November and had been doing petty jobs.
He has a five-year-old son and his wife died nearly 18 months ago.
Since he knew that the woman lived alone and had no family to spend her wealth on,he decided to rob her after killing, said DSP (East) Jaswant Singh Khaira.
On January 16,Sarwan followed the victim. As she went inside her home and locked the door,he knocked. She identified him and opened the door since he had visited her house earlier also. He immediately slit her throat, leaving her in a pool of blood. Then he searched the house and found nearly Rs 12000,gold ornaments and the victims mobile phone, the DSP said.
After committing the crime, the accused spent the night at her shop where Mangal was sleeping. On Sunday,he went to Delhi after informing Mangal that he had to meet his father, who is involved in a case in Lucknow. The murder came to light on Sunday evening.
Station house officer of Sector-36 police station said the police suspected his role following his disappearance and the doubts were confirmed after tracing Shashis mobile phone.
