Sector 17 retailers face parking and business woes, approach MC

Retailers running their business at Sector 17 market might face a major parking problem with the Municipal Corporation completely sealing Gurdev parking lot on Tuesday.

Retailers running their business at Sector 17 market might face a major parking problem with the Municipal Corporation completely sealing Gurdev parking lot on Tuesday. The parking area has been sealed for the construction of a multi-level parking lot.

This, however, has irked the retailers in the vicinity as the MC has sealed the whole parking area. The retailers say that the move will affect their business in a significant way as their customers will have to find a parking space for their vehicles at a considerable distance away from the stores run by the retailers. The multi-level parking lot that has been proposed would be three-storey,with two of its floors being underground.

The retailers have now asked Municipal Commissioner V P Singh to find a solution to the problem of adequate parking space. “We are facing a loss in our business due to the complete shutdown of the parking lot. We are not against the idea of constructing a multi-level parking, but want an alternative parking lot till the time MC completes its work,” said Tarun Sibal,a retailer in Sector 17. “Since the peak season of our business is about to start with the festivals of Dussehra and Diwali round the corner,we have requested the MC to find a solution to our problem at the earliest.”

Mohan Bir Singh,a retailer, said,“We would appreciate if we would be notified about an expected time period it would require for the MC to complete its project. We suggest that some alternative parking area be provided to us like the one between the MC building and office of the Reserve Bank of India.”

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline,Municipal Commissioner V P Singh said,“We will be sending a request to the UT Administration seeking an alternative parking area. The multi-level project would take about 18 months to be completed. Till then,we would try our best to find a solution to the parking problem faced by the retailers.”
