Four unknown men allegedly abducted the director of a private school from near Sector 49 at gunpoint and robbed him of his SUV and other valuables before abandoning him near Zirakpur on Saturday night.
Karandeep Singh Brar, 44, who is the director of St Soldier International Convent School in Mohali, and a resident of Sector 33, suffered minor injuries during the incident as he was taken forcibly outside the city in his SUV before being abandoned.
According to the police, Brar alleged that he was returning to his residence after a regular evening stroll in Sector 48 around 8.30 pm when the incident occurred. “After the stroll, he was headed back to his house in his Ford Endeavour (CH-01-AD-0261) but stopped briefly on the road dividing sectors 49 and 50 to make a phone call to his wife. While he was on the phone, a man knocked on the car’s window and Brar thought he wanted some help. When However, when Brar lowered the window, the person abruptly took out the car keys and pushed Brar to the other seat,” said the police.
Officials said that three other accomplices of the man suddenly appeared and sat inside the car after dragging Brar to the rear seat at gunpoint. When he tried to raise an alarm, he was allegedly thrashed with the butt of a gun.
The robbers then started driving the car while Brar’s head was forcibly lowered to prevent him from seeing where they were headed. He was allegedly robbed of two mobile phones, his wallet containing around Rs 35,000, a gold bangle and a gold ring.
After driving for around 20 minutes, they allegedly pushed him out of the moving vehicle and threatened him not to disclose the incident to anyone.
Brar realised that he was on the Zirakpur-Rajpura highway and stopped an autorickshaw. He then borrowed the auto driver’s phone to call up his family and returned home, before informing the police about the entire episode.
Kirpal Singh, SHO of Sector 34 police station, said that a case of abduction and robbery has been registered under the relevant sections of the IPC and efforts are on to nab the accused.
Brar told the police that all the accused were speaking in Punjabi and also talked about shooting him while they were driving. Moreover, they also told him that they had been following him for over a month.
“We are conducting raids to nab the culprits. The last mobile tower location of the snatched mobile phones was in Dera Bassi and we’re also working on some other potential clues,” said police sources.
