UT Chandigarh has been ranked first among all Union Territories of the country,for its implementation of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal opportunities,protection of rights and full participation) Act,1995. The ranking,decided by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment,Government of India,was made on the basis of the report and presentation made during the 8th national meeting of the State Commissioners for Persons with Disabilities held on December 16 and 17,2008.

“Under the National Programme for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (NPRPD),a State Resource Centre-cum-District Rehabilitation Centre has been set up in the Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32,Chandigarh. A Genetic Lab for screening of various Metabolic Disorders has also been set up in the GMCH-32,Chandigarh,” an official press release read.

The UT Administration has been implementing various welfare schemes for the disabled,some of which include: pension to disabled persons (Rs 250 per month); assistance to the disabled for purchase of aids/ appliances up to Rs 20,000,or cost of appliance,which ever is less; 50 per cent petrol/ diesel subsidy to disabled persons (maximum 30 litre) and unemployment allowance to disabled persons,from Rs 150 to Rs 400 per month,among others.

“Chandigarh Administration has also notified a scheme called the “licensing of bare booth sites/ build up booths to persons with disabilities scheme,2009,through the Estate Officer,UT,Chandigarh,” said an official spokesperson with the UT Administration.
