“I do not know the whereabouts of my husband. He has not contacted me ever since his name figured in the FIR registered against him on charges of murder,” is what Satkar Kaur — Congress candidate from Ferozepur (Rural) Assembly — has told the police during interrogation.

Satkar Kaur’s husband Jasmail Singh has been absconding since January 30,after allegedly shooting dead a youth,Nishan Singh, outside a polling booth on the eve of the polls. Satkar had been hand-picked by AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi’s for the January 30 Assembly polls in Punjab and in her support,Rahul had held a massive rally in Ferozepur on January 25.

Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police H S Mann said: “We have questioned Satkar Kaur about her husband Jasmail Singh aka Ladi Gayri’s whereabouts, but she says she has no information about him. Two persons have already been arrested in the case. More arrests will follow soon.”

Jasmail was named as one of the prime accused in the FIR registered against him and his supporters for the murder of Nishan Singh — a resident of Piaranwala village in Ferozepur (Rural) constituency.

Even after two weeks, the Punjab Police has failed to make any substantial headway in the case, except for arresting two persons. Jasmail has no criminal record and the murder case registered against him is the first criminal case filed against him. He was the most active campaigner in support of his wife in the run-up to the Vidhan Sabha polls.

“We have so far questioned Jasmail’s father, close relatives and friends, but have not been able to pin point on his exact whereabouts. Raids are being conducted at various places but he has managed to evade arrest till date. We are working on certain vital inputs and hope to arrest him soon,” said Mann.

The family of Nishan Singh,on the other hand,is ruing the police inaction in the murder case of their only son. Nishan’s uncle Sukhdev Singh, while talking to The Indian Express, said: “One can imagine the fairness of investigation in such a case, where Rahul Gandhi’s handpicked candidate’s husband has been named as the accused. Such big people enjoy the patronage of top political bigwigs. In such a scenario,we do not hope that the police will do anything substantial. We want him arrested and punished severely. Our son is not going to return. Our family is ruined and the killers are still roaming free. We have lost all faith in the police.”

Nishan,a second-year student at a college in Ferozepur, had returned from Singapore in the first week of January. On January 29,he had gone to Jalandhar to get medicines for his grandfather. He returned home and went to the polling booth on the outskirts of the village to take a look at the atmosphere, when he was allegedly shot dead by Jasmail and his supporters.
