Chandigarh:City tennis player Sanam Singh defeated sixth-seeded compatriot Yuki Bhambri 7-6(4),1-6,6-2 in the pre-quarterfinals of the $50,000 Challenger tennis tournament held in Shanghai,China,on Thursday. It was the second victory for 24-year-old Sanam against Yuki in professional circuit,following the three-set victory in the previous meeting in Chennai in 2009. In the quarterfinals,qualifier Sanam will meet top seed Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei,who defeated Kiwi qualifier Jose Statham 7-5,6-1. The 20-year-old Yuki will have the doubles quarterfinals to compete in partnership with Divij Sharan. Vishnu Vardhan,however,lost in the first round of doubles in partnership with Denys Molchanov of Ukraine 7-6(2),4-6,6-10 against wild cards Gao Xin and Li Zhe of China.
Himachal,Haryana in quarter-finals
Chandigarh:Continuing with their fine form,both Himachal Pradesh and Haryana entered the quarter-final stage of the 20th Junior National Korfball Championship being held at the Government High School Ground in Sector 34,on Friday. Both the teams won all of their three league matches to stay on the top. In the inaugural match,Delhi beat Madhya Pradesh 13-2 in a lop-sided encounter. In another match,Rajasthan got the better of Assam 8-5,as they were leading 5-1 at the stroke of the half time. Meanwhile,Himachal Pradesh outplayed Orrisa 7-3,Andhra Pradesh breezed past West Bengal 9-3,Delhi beat Uttrakhand 8-3 and hosts Chandigarh also made a strong impression by defeating Maharastra 13-3. Chattisgarh beat Rajasthan 8-4,Manipur outclassed Uttrakhand 7-2,Himachal Pradesh defeated West Bengal 3-1 to win their second match of the day,Chandigarh thrashed Punjab 10-1,Chattisgarh battered Assam 7-1,Andhra Pradesh outplayed Karnataka 8-2 and Haryana whitewashed Rajasthan 18-3,in other matches.
Satyam steers Saupins XI to victory
Chandigarh:Satyam top scored with 45 runs as defending champions Saupins School,Sector 32,remained favourite to win the title by thumping St Kabir XI by nine wickets in the St Joseph’s cash prize cricket tournament,played at the School Ground on Friday. Earlier,batting first,St Kabir XI were restricted to 91 runs in 20 overs. Manav,Jakshu and Aditya took two wickets each for the team. In reply,Saupin’s XI achieved the target in the 14th over by losing just one wicket.
