Sahepreet looked in supreme touch as he scored thrice to help Chandigarh thrash Tripura 10-2 to open their account on a winning note in a league match of the 3rd Hockey India Junior Men National Championships being held at Moti Lal Nehru Sports Complex,Rai in Sonepat on Saturday.
In what was their opening league match in Pool H,Chandigarh players hit form right from the beginning and kept scoring goals to register an easy win. Sahepreet was in sparkling form while others also came up with noteworthy performances.
Meanwhile,Delhi drubbed Andhra Pradesh 4-1 to enter the quarter-finals. After conceding an early goal,Delhi came from behind and scored four goals in the other half in the Pool D match.
The turning point of the match came when Jugraj Singh scored the opening goal in the 36th minute after which Delhi scored three other goals. Deepak Kumar,Inder Pal Singh and Manish Sharma scored a goal each for Delhi.
In Pool B,Tamil Nadu easily defeated Jammu & Kashmir 3-0. This was the second lost for Jammu & Kashmir in a row.
In the other match of Pool H,Hockey Maharashtra mauled Goa 22-0. Ashutosh Lingesh scored six goals for the team.
Punjab enter semis
Defending champions Punjab thrashed Jharkhand 6-0 to advance to the semifinals of the 3rd Hockey India Senior Men National Championship in Pune on Saturday.
Haryana,Karnataka and Air India also entered the last four stage with wins in their quarterfinal matches.
In the semifinals to be played on Sunday,last year’s runners-up Air India take on Haryana while Punjab clash with Karnataka.
Punjab dominated the proceedings in their quarterfinal match played at Shiv Chhatrapati Shivaji Sports Complex and scored at regular intervals.
Deepak Thakur scored two goals while Sarvanjit Singh,Gurjinder Singh,Ravi Pal Singh and Inderjeet Singh found the target once.
Air India,on the other hand,scored a hard-fought 5-4 win over Railways at Major Dhyan Chand Polygrass Hockey Stadium at Pimpri.
Haryana defeated Chandigarh 4-1 after conceding an early goal. Chandigarh,who led 1-0 at half time,lost their rhythm in the second half which allowed their opponents to score four goals.
Mandeep Antil,Shivdeep,Jagwant and Hansraj scored a goal each for Haryana. Chandigarh were unable to build on the early break as they committed far too many errors in their defence to allow Haryana to gain the upper hand.
In the last quarter-final match of the day,Karnataka scored twice in each half to overcome Manipur 4-2.
