The SAD-BJP councillors on Thursday urged Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to replace Kulwant Singh as mayor.
In an hour-long meeting with the deputy chief minister, the SAD-BJP councillors once again expressed their resentment towards Kulwant and his group of councillors.
They also requested Sukhbir to give the posts of deputy mayor and senior deputy mayor to the councillors who contested the elections on SAD-BJP symbol.
The SAD councillors said they don’t trust Kulwant, as he had first left the party
and then joined hands with their main rival — Congress — to become the mayor. They also demanded that a councillor from SAD be made the mayor on the basis of his seniority.
A councillor, who was in the meeting, told the Chandigarh Newsline that they also demanded the appointment of the chairman of District Planning Board to carry on with the development works.
The councillors said they want senior deputy mayor Rishab Jain to step down as he belongs to the rival party – Congress.
Meanwhile, the deputy chief minister assured all the councillors that he will look into the matter and will talk to the mayor regarding the demands of the SAD councillors.
He also told the councillors that from now onwards, Punjab Education Minister Daljeet Singh Cheema will look after the problems of the constituency and the councillors can communicate with him.
The names of some close aides of Cheema are also making the rounds for the post of chairman of the District Planning Board. Sources said SAD councillor Kuldeep Kaur Kang is likely to be given the responsibility soon, but nobody confirmed it officially.
After the meeting, which was held at the guest house of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited in Phase VIII, all the 23 councillors of SAD and BJP joined the inauguration function of the District Administrative Complex where the councillors of Kulwant’s group were also present.
