In a fraudulent withdrawal of money from the General Provident Fund (GPF) accounts of teachers,an amount of Rs 33 lakh has been allegedly siphoned off by a clerk at the Government Secondary School at Akalgarh Dhapayian,allegedly with the active connivance of certain bank employees.
The clerk,Suba Singh,has been missing since last week. Suba had been allegedly withdrawing the money belonging to over 25 teachers since 2007.
Joint Platform of Mass Organisations (JPMO) head Germanjit Singh Bath said the fraud came to the light on October 21 when Suba was summoned by the audit staff from the Treasury Department. He came with some of the the records,placed them before the Committee and just vanished. The Department is trying to trace him, said Bath.
DEO (Secondary) Surjit Singh Gumanpura said they had already ordered a probe into the matter and would recommend strict action against the erring staff members. Bath said earlier that Suba withdrew huge amounts from the teachers GPF accounts with the active connivance of State Bank of India employees at the Cantonment branch. Amritsar Deputy Commissioner K S Pannu said the matter had been brought to his notice and he would get a case registered after a thorough probe.
