Research work at the Panjab University (PU) for the current session (2009-10) is at an all-time high with the grant received for the purpose approximating close to Rs 1 crore. According to data available with the Centre for Industry Institute Partnership Programme (CIIPP),the revenue generated for the university by research work for different consultancies in the current year is by far the highest in the last five years.

Compared to last year, the receipt amount has experienced a jump of Rs 70 lakh. Topping the list is the Pharmacy department that has been getting the maximum projects. At present, the department has two projects—one worth Rs 12 lakh and the other worth Rs 50 lakh.

The other departments involved in research work include Geology,UBS,Biotechnology and the University Institute of Engineering and Technology.

According to CIIPP director Prof Lalit Bansal, there are two kinds of researches. One is academic, which the faculty does on its own, while the other category is of those researches that are done for outside agencies or consultancies who pay for them.

“All the departments doing research work inform us about the project and deposit the receipts with us. According to our rules, the departments have to share with the university 50 per cent of the amount received for a research. The research amount this year is around Rs 1 crore,” said Bansal.

“This Rs 1 crore is the amount being generated through the research being done for consultancies,” he explained.

According to Bansal, different researchers in the university file their patents through the Centre.

Prof S C Vaidya is researching on a Rs 18-lakh project while Prof V K Rattan is working on another venture of Rs 8 lakh.
