The Chandigarh Police is suspecting the involvement of a family member or someone known who raped and murdered the 10-year-old girl,a resident of Palsora village, whose body was found in a plastic bag in Sector 52 a fortnight back.

In a report submitted to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) on Thursday, the special investigation team (SIT),constituted to probe the murder case, has noted that the involvement of one of the victim’s kin in the rape and murder cannot be ruled out. The investigation done so far reveals that the crime was committed by one person. However, the SIT investigation remains inconclusive.

The report reads,“All the suspects including the victim’s parents, friends, residents of her locality, drug addicts and others under the police radar are being questioned. There is a possibility that the accused is a relative, neighbour or someone known to the victim.”

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime) Satbir Singh said,“We are not ruling out the possibility that one of her relatives committed the crime. All the aspects of the case are being looked into.”

“The victim’s injury marks suggest that one person had strangled her,” the DSP added.

Inspector General of UT Police R P Upadhyaya had earlier said the SIT would focus on analysing the dump data from the mobile phone towers of the area where the victim resided and where her body was found. The SIT report, however, reads that “the dump data collected from nearby mobile towers did not reveal anything which leads to the identification of accused”.

The police also scrutinised over half a dozen CCTV cameras which are installed near the victim’s residence. According to the report, one of the CCTV cameras shows the victim holding a pack of eatables between 3 pm and 4 pm. But no clue was obtained from the CCTV footage.

As per the SIT report,10 police teams were deputed at Palsora to question the suspects. Despite the efforts made by these teams, the police are clueless about the identity of the accused.

The girl was reported missing on November 27 when she left her house to go to a nearby playground. When she did not return, parents searched for her. Failing to find her,the parents approached the police. When the parents did not get a satisfying response from the police, protests were held.
