The Chandigarh Police on Thursday arrested two more persons allegedly accused of rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl, a resident of Palsora village, in December.
Sunita, 30, a housewife, and Bhagat Singh, 25, were detained by the police on Wednesday but arrested on Thursday.
“Two more accused have been arrested and further investigations are going on,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill.
According to sources, police suspected involvement of five people in the crime. The two accused, Anirudh and Raj Kumar, had named the duo — Sunita alias Billy and Bhagat Singh alias Manga, both residents of Palsora — and a fifth person who is an auto-rickshaw driver and is yet to be arrested.
As per sources, Sunita had kidnapped the girl from Palsora and took her in an auto-rickshaw driven by the fifth accused. Anirudh, Raj Kumar and Bhagat Singh were in the auto too. The remains of a burnt black blanket used in the crime were recovered by the police and sent to the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory for analysis.

Bhagat Singh, according to the police, had come in contact with Anirudh and Raj Kumar a few months before the incident. The three are said to be drug addicts. However, it is yet to be ascertained how the accused knew Sunita.
After the girl was kidnapped, sources said, the five accused took her around the city in the auto-rickshaw. She was raped in the auto. On November 27 when the girl was kidnapped, she was raped and then dropped at Sunita’s house where she was kept as a hostage for the night.
On November 28, the accused again took the minor around the city in the auto, raped her and then took her to Phase VII, Mohali, where Anirudh and Raj Kumar stayed with her. On November 30, the minor was kept in Phase VII, Mohali. After the police started search operations, Raj Kumar, whom the minor recognised, allegedly murdered her in Mohali and then threw her body in a plastic bag in Sector 52 near the furniture market, as per sources.
“Raj Kumar had also participated in the protest which was staged by the residents of Palsora after the victim’s body was found. He was keeping tabs on what was happening in the case. Both Anirudh and Raj Kumar moved to Maloya after murdering the victim and were later arrested by the Punjab Police,” said a police source.
