Monsoon has finally arrived. The city received 26.8 mm rain in the last 24 hours.
The rains brought down the maximum temperature to a comfortable 33 degrees Celsius, bringing relief from heat. For the last 10 days, the temperature had been hovering above the 40-degree mark.
The minimum temperature, which has been around 28 to 30 degrees, also came down to 22.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
The heat, besides causing heat strokes and raising power demand, had forced schools to extend summer vacations till next week. With only 11 mm recorded in the city,June was the driest month in the last few years.

Director of the Met Department Chattar Singh said the city is likely to receive good rains. Monsoon has arrived in the region. Just a few areas in Punjab and Haryana are left. They would be covered soon. We are expecting good rains even though pre-monsoon showers were weak, he said.
However, the Municipal Corporation and the UT Administration have been caught unawares as works like cleaning of road gullies, laying paver blocks and widening of roads are lying incomplete. Now,this work may restart only after rains.
But with the temperature falling, the water and power situation is likely to improve.
