“Ragging in educational institutions is an insult to human dignity and to make it a cognizable offence,an amendment in the Indian Penal Code is required,” said former chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Virender Jain, while referring to the recent case of ragging, which resulted in a student’s death at medical college in Tanda.

“If the college administration, including the principal, was aware that the victim was being ragged, they cannot shirk their responsibility,” he said.

Jain, who is also the international president of Asia Pacific Jurist Association, said it was sad that ragging had taken an ugly form in India.

“Ragging of a student in any educational institution should be condemned and the guilty should be punished under the law,” said Jain.
