Qualifier Ankit topples fourth seed Arpit to reach semis

Qualifier Ankit Sachdeva showed that his second round victory over third seed Ajay Yadav was no fluke.

Qualifier Ankit Sachdeva showed that his second round victory over third seed Ajay Yadav was no fluke as he once again defeated a seeded player in the quarter-finals to progress into the last four stage of the men singles category of the National Ranking Rs 2 lakh tennis tournament being held at CLTA Complex in Sector 10,on Wednesday. This time he defeated fifth seed Arpit Sharma in a lop-sided encounter.

Ankit’s confidence was high as he entered the court to take on Arpit. Right from the beginning,he exerted pressure on the seeded player and took the first set 6-3. Arpit played under pressure in the second set also and bowled down meekly after conceding the set 6-2.

Meanwhile,top seed Kunal Anand made it to the semi-finals with an easy 6-3,6-2 win over eighth seed Hardeep Sandhu. It was Hardeep who showed flashes of brilliance and broke’s Kunal’s serve in the first set. However,Kunal bounced back and won the first set 6-3 and then continued to play some brilliant shots from the baseline to win the second set 6-2.

Gurinder Singh,meanwhile,ousted fourth seed Brahmjot Singh 6-4,6-4. Both the players tried to outwit each other by cleverly mixing their game with drop shots and top spins. However,Gurinder had the last laugh when he kept his cool under pressure and won both the sets to move ahead in the tournament. Another qualifier,Jajbir Singh,also made it to the semi-finals when he upset second seed Yogesh Phogat 6-2,6-3 in a lop-sided encounter.

In the women section,wild card entrant Gayatri Kumariah maintained her dream run by reaching the semi-final with an easy 6-2,6-1 win over Ankita Ghotar. Gayatri used variations to good effect in her ground strokes to bamboozle her opponent. Fourth seed Renu Sharma got the better of Anjali Thakur 6-4,6-3 and will face unseeded Gayarti Kumaraiah in the semi-finals. Also,third seed Vineeta Singh dominated in a one-sided match against Priyanka Rawat and she was leading 6-1,4-0 when Priyanka conceded the match. Qualifier Rimpledeep Kaur,however,upset fifth seed Aashima Garg 6-3,6-3.
