PUTA elections on August 9,list of nominees out

The list of valid candidates for the Panjab University Teachers’ Association executive body elections,to be held on August 9,were declared on Monday evening,after the scrutiny of the nomination papers.

The list of valid candidates for the Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) executive body elections,to be held on August 9,were declared on Monday evening,after the scrutiny of the nomination papers.

Though direct elections between two candidates are expected this year for the five key positions,three nominations have been filed for the positions of president and secretary. The current PUTA executive body is headed by the Manjeet-Akshaya-Khalid group while the Mahajan-Devinder group is its chief opposition. There are 18 executive positions of PUTA,for which elections will be contested on August 9.

Akshaya Kumar (English) and Mohammed Khalid (Department of Evening Studies) have been nominated by the Manjeet-Akshaya-Khalid group for the position of president while Ravi K. Mahajan (University School of Open Learning) has been nominated for president by the Mahajan-Devinder group.

Similarly,for the position of the secretary,two nominations,Jayanti Dutta (ASC) and Shivani Sharma (Philosophy),have been filed by the Manjeet-Akshaya-Khalid group while Devinder Singh (Laws) has been nominated by the Mahajan-Devinder group.

For the four executive positions for the arts faculty,11 nominations have been received,for the four positions for the science faculty,ten nominations have been received and for the three positions for other professional faculties,seven nominations have been received. There is no competition for the one position for the Department of Evening Studies and the University School of Open Learning,with one nomination each for these two positions.

The election campaign by the two groups has begun with Mohammed Khalid and Ravi Mahajan as the two main candidates for PUTA president. Mohammed Khalid says that many tangible achievements have been made by his group in the past year and seeks to overcome the faculty crunch in many departments by asking for the quick recruitment and consistent promotion of teachers. The opposition candidate,Ravi Mahajan,says that his focus will be on developing good working conditions for teachers and improving their quality of performance,if he is elected.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is August 1 and the final list of candidates will be announced on August 3.
