In a written statement submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Punjabi University (Pbi),Patiala, has agreed to make 438 regular appointments for posts currently filled on ad hoc and contractual basis. The statement came in response to a PIL filed by one Harsharan Kaur and other un-employed persons, challenging the action of the Punjabi University,in appointing 431 persons to various non-teaching posts on ad hoc and contractual basis without advertising for the posts. “The university proposes to fill up the posts in question on a regular basis,i.e.,by open advertisement. Keeping in view the numerous categories and further sub-categories of non-teaching posts, and also the time period required to invite applications,a period of about one year is most likely to be consumed,” reads the statement. The petitioner alleged that while all the 431 appointments were made by former vice-chancellor S S Boparai, their tenure has been increased by the present vice chancellor.
