Youth Akali Dal leader Ravinder Pal Singh alias Minku Gurmail and his brother Sadhu Gurmail have been booked for allegedly thrashing the owners and managers of an eatery here following a petty dispute.
Minku is the district vice-president of Youth Akali Dal and spokesperson of Students’ Organization of India, the students’ wing of Akali Dal.
The incident happened at Aman Chicken, a famous eatery in Shastri Nagar of Ludhiana where Minku and his brother had placed an order for a fish dish for home delivery on Tuesday night.
Both Minku and Sadhu are sons of Bhagwan Singh, a confidant of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who hosts CM at his residence on his visits to Ludhiana. The family owns Gurmail Medical Hall, the largest wholesale pharmacy in Ludhiana at Pindi Street.
As per the FIR, Manpreet Singh, son of Gurjinder Singh Bittu, owners of Aman Chicken, says that on Tuesday late evening, Sadhu called up their manager to place an order. First, he hurled abuses at manager on phone and then asked him to pass on phone to the owners.
When the argument heated up, Sadhu said “he will come at the spot and teach them a lesson”.
As per the complaint, Sadhu reached the spot and started thrashing Manpreet and manager Ravinderpal. Then, he allegedly took out a gun and started threatening them. When Manpreet’s father Gurjinder Singh Bittu and brother Gurpreet Singh intervened, Sadhu allegedly grabbed them by collar, thrashed and dragged them out of the shop. They also repeatedly said they “will shoot all and put Aman Chicken on fire”.
“They hit us with bricks and then fired in the air. Sadhu’s brother Minku also joined him soon and they started thrashing my brother Gurpreet Singh. They dragged us by the hair and punched us,” says Manpreet in the complaint.
The family has also claimed that Gurjinder Singh Bittu has gone “missing” since the incident and if anything happens to him, the “police and Gurmail family would be responsible”.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Gurpreet Singh, brother of Manpreet, said, “My father has not come back home since last night. If anything happens to him, police and administration will be responsible.”
However, after the family’s ‘missing’ complaint, Bittu took to Facebook and posted a video abusing the accused. In the video, he is seen saying that the accused are using the name of Badals to threaten and suppress innocent people in the city.
ACP (West) Surendra Lamba said the FIR had been registered against Minku Gurmail, Sadhu Gurmail, Danny and an unidentified accomplice at Sarabha Nagar police station under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 451 (trespassing), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly) and various sections of Arms Act.
“The suspects are absconding. We are trying to arrest them. Gurjinder Singh is also unavailable after the incident, but we are trying to trace him through mobile tower locations,” said Lamba.
The incident was also captured in CCTV cameras at Aman Chicken being used by police for investigation.
Despite repeated attempts, minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who is also the spokesperson for SOI, and Bunty Romana, national coordinator of SOI, did not respond to calls.
Victim ‘threatens’ suicide
Gurjinder Singh sent some audio clips recorded on WhatsApp in some groups and said he had been humiliated and thrashed. He alleged the police were not taking action against the “influential” accused. He also threatened to commit suicide.
Whenever CM Parkash Singh Badal visits Ludhiana, he stays at the residence of Gurmail family on College road. In December 2009, Sadhu Singh had manhandled K S Ghuman, a home guards officer in Sarabha Nagar area.
