The Punjab Police said Monday they have arrested five people, including two shooters, for allegedly killing Jarmal Singh, an AAP leader and the sarpanch of Valtoha Sandhua village in Tarn Taran district, during a wedding in Amritsar on January 4.

Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Gaurav Yadav, DGP, Punjab, said they arrested the shooters, Sukhraj Singh and Karamjit Singh, from Raipur in Chhattisgarh, where they were holed up, in a joint operation with the Chhattisgarh Police.

“Seven people have been arrested in connection with the murder — two from Raipur, three from Tarn Taran, and two from Mohali. Investigation revealed technical leads which identified different modules, handlers from abroad, and those providing logistical support, including vehicles, shelter, etc,” DGP Yadav said.

While two people were arrested Sunday, two others were nabbed earlier

He added that the Punjab Police took the transit remand of the two shooters until January 14, and they are being brought to Amritsar by air.

Amit Prasad, ADGP Counter Intelligence, GPS Bhullar, Commissioner Amritsar police, and Sukhchain Singh Gill, IG (Headquarters), were also present at the press conference.

Gangster Prabh Dasuwal, based in Portugal, has been identified as the mastermind behind the murder of the sarpanch. Personal enmity with the deceased is said to be the reason for the crime.

Sarpanch killed at a wedding

On January 4, Jarmal was shot dead in a brazen attack during a wedding ceremony at the Marigold Marriage Palace in Amritsar. The attack occurred at around 2.30–3 pm, shortly after the bride and groom had left the venue.

The two assailants entered the hall, approached Jarmal while he was eating, and fired at him from point-blank range from behind.

Chilling CCTV footage captured the moment. The gunmen walked in unmasked, pulled out a pistol, fired without haste, and fled the scene within seconds, leaving guests in shock and panic.

Jarmal was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Jarmal had survived at least three previous attempts on his life, including a shooting at his vehicle in March 2025. A social media post, purportedly from foreign-based gangsters, claimed responsibility, naming individuals like Dolly Bal (Donny Bal), Prabh Dasuwal, Afridi Toot, Mohabbat Randhawa, Amar Khabbe, and Pawan Shaukeen (linked to the Bambiha gang). They alleged prior attempts at his life, and levelled serious accusations against him.

On January 6, gangster Harnur Singh, alias Noor, linked to the conspiracy and associated with Prabh Dasuwal and Afridi, was killed in a police encounter in Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran. The police also recovered a pistol from them.

The case sparked political controversy. Opposition parties, including the BJP and the SAD, condemned the incident, and highlighted a law-and-order crisis in Punjab, noting it was a part of multiple murders in early January.

They also demanded the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Aam Aadmi Party leaders have assured swift justice.
