Pastor Bajinder Singh
The Punjab Police Tuesday booked Pastor Bajinder Singh on charges of assault, wrongful restraint and other charges, after a woman (40), who was seen in a viral, purported video clip as being slapped by the self-styled preacher, filed a complaint alleging that he had also tried to strangle her.
Separately, a 22-year-old woman, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Bajinder, appeared before the National Commission (NCW) for Women, in Delhi. Based on the second woman’s complaint, Bajinder (40) was booked on charges of sexual harassment on February 28.
The fresh FIR has been registered at Majri police station in Mullanpur. Inspector Sunil Kumar, SHO, Majri, said Bajinder has been booked sections 74 (assault with intent to harm a woman’s dignity), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on the complaint of the woman who had been serving in Bajinder’s ministry for the past 13-14 years.
Talking to reporters, woman said that the incident, whose CCTV camera footage has gone viral, occurred on February 14 when the Pastor “misbehaved with me in the church, slapped me, and even tried to strangle me”.
She said a man whose sister had stopped attending Bajinder’s church had come to meet him on that day. The woman claimed that Bajinder was under the false impression that she had instigated the family not to send the woman to the church.
Bajinder runs two churches — The Church of Glory and Wisdom at Tajpur in Jalandhar and another one in Mohali’s Majri. He became a preacher in 2012, with his supporters claiming that he presides over 260 churches worldwide
“I considered Bajinder a man of God and served in his church. But, after some time, I realized that he was deceiving people,” the woman said in her police complaint.
She claimed that when she decided to leave the ministry, Bajinder and his supporters began conspiring against her. “He harassed me daily, humiliated me, and insulted me in front of people,” she claimed, adding that the preacher had made her sign blank papers. “I resigned from the church, but he has not return my Aadhaar card, PAN card, or the signed blank papers,” she claimed.
Meanwhile, the NCW officials said that 22-year-old woman appeared before them for a hearing . In her police complaint, the woman had alleged that Bajinder used to send text messages to her, and allegedly made her sit alone in a cabin in the church on Sundays, during which he touched her inappropriately. Based on her complaint, police had registered a case against the pastor under sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the BNS.
