Punjab Cabinet minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra, and BJP leader and former state CM Captain Amarinder Singh’s daughter, Jai Inder Kaur, on Thursday indulged in a heated verbal spat over the use of a boat to distribute food and relief material among the flood-affected people.
As per details, the incident took place in Sassa Gujran village and was captured on video by someone and posted online on Thursday, leading to it going viral.
The video shows Jai Inder stopping a tractor trolley carrying two boats, and demanding that a boat be made available to her to provide relief material to the flood-affected people in the area.
“Do not waste time,” Jai Inder is heard telling the tractor-trolley men as Jouramajra arrives and asks who stopped the tractor-trolley. Jai Inder responds by saying “I have stopped” to which Jourmajra tells her “don’t do this”. Jai Inder then asks him “who are you [to say this]” to which Jouramajra replies in a loud voice, “I am this constituency’s MLA, a [Punjab government] minister.”
An unrelenting Jai Inder is then seen forcing her way onto the tractor as the arguments continue. Talking to the media, Jai Inder later said, “Today (on Thursday), we had come from Patiala with food, as neither food nor water was being made available to flood-affected people in the village of Sassa Gujran for the past three days.” She then went on to claim that the minister refused to provide her one of the two boats, which she said she was told “were being taken to adjacent Haryana side”.
Jai Inder, later, waded through waist-deep water along with her team to distribute the relief material, even as one of her team-members videographed her as she walked with a pack of water bottles on her head.
When contacted, Jouramajra told The Indian Express, “She (Jai Inder Kaur) is neither an MP, nor an MLA and not even a councilor. In what capacity was she interefering in the government [relief] work.”
The minister added, “Three motor boats and one manual boat were already there in the area for relief work. We had requisitioned these two boats from Chandigarh to provide relief material to the flood-affected people in villages located next to Sassa Gujran.”
On Jai Inder’s remarks that she was told that boats were being taken towards adjacent Haryana side, Jouramajra said, “She would not have said so had she known about the villages in the constituency. We were headed for villages like Dharmeri and others. I know the area. I was born and brought up here. For the last four days, I have been out in the field, going to people from village to village.”
Taking a jibe at Jai Inder, Jouramajra further said, “Eh rajneetak rotian sekan da time nahi hai (This is no time for political opportunism). She
will get time for that later on.”
Jai Inder had joined BJP along with Captain Amarinder Singh last year and is tipped to be the BJP nominee from Patiala in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. On Tuesday, after four days of unrelenting rain gave way to a clear day, Jai Inder and her mother and Patiala MP, Preneet Kaur, had performed an ancient ritual to “save Patiala from floods” as they offered nathh (a gold nose ring) and a choora (red and white bangles worn by brides) to Badi Nadi, a seasonal rivulet in Patiala.
