With effect from February 15, the traffic wing of Punjab police is set to strictly implement the rule which makes it mandatory to wear rear seat belts while travelling in four-wheeler motor vehicles.
As per Central Motor Vehicle Rules, wearing rear seat belt in a moving four wheeler motor vehicle is mandatory and non-compliance attracts a fine of Rs 1000.
In a correspondence to Commissioners of Police and Senior Superintendents of Police across the State, the office of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Traffic Wing, Punjab police, has directed them to create awareness about mandatory wearing of rear seat belts by the passengers.
While referring to National Road Safety month – 2024 being observed from January 15 to February 14 and during which police were sensitising people about traffic rules, the February 1 correspondence asked the field officers to “direct traffic education cell in-charges to call meeting of common people and drivers of police and official vehicles and tell them to drive the vehicles only after wearing seats belts”.
The correspondence also read that if any gunman sits next to driver’s seat, he will also wear seat belt.
“Apart from this, any official in a government vehicle/common people in their four wheeler vehicle who sit on rear seats would wear belt. Common people be made aware of this daily in the seminars organized by traffic education cell,” read the correspondence, adding that a message should also be spread that action would be taken as per Motor Vehicle Act against any government/non-government driver and official who does not wear front and rear seat belt [in a moving four-wheeler) after the end of National Road Safety month.
