A resident of Badwa village in Ropar, Punjab, who works as a driver in Kuwait, won a Rs 10-crore lottery on Sunday.
Harpinder Singh, who had returned to his village to meet his family, purchased the winning ticket from Ashoka Lottery in Nurpur Bedi town, Ropar district.
“I used to buy lottery tickets regularly. This time, I bought the Lohri Bumper tickets, and later, I received a call from Ashoka Lottery informing me that I had won,” Harpinder said.
The Lohri Makar Sankranti Bumper carried the highest ever prize of Rs 10 crore in the state.
Hemant Kakkar, the owner of Ashoka Lottery, expressed his happiness, saying he was glad one of his buyers won the prize.
Harpinder shared that he has faced many hardships in life and has been driving trucks for a long time. After his win, he plans to help the needy and support his family.
“I also have many debts to clear,” said Harpinder who seemed to find it hard to believe his good fortune.
Harpinder says he spent quite a fortune to travel to Kuwait. His son Devinder Singh lost hair left arm in an accident a few years ago. “It was a big shock for all of us. I hope now I will be able to get him good treatment and ensure that he has a steady source of income .”
Punjab State Lotteries Department officials have confirmed that 30 per cent of the prize money will be deducted as tax at source, along with additional income tax liabilities.
The win has brought significant gains for vendor Hemant Kakkar as well, who is set to receive nearly Rs 25 lakh, while the sub-stockist will earn Rs 5 lakh. Additionally, Kakkar’s credibility as a “reliable” ticket seller has been bolstered, according to officials.
Kakkar said the mega prize money was attracting more and more people to buy tickets from him. “But there is a bar to entry, a ticket costs a princely Rs 500, not everyone has the guts to spend this sum.“
