Usually, India records four to seven heatwave days from April to June.
Punjab and Haryana are reeling under an intense heatwave, with the maximum temperature soaring beyond 40°C in several parts of the region.
The Indian Meteorological Department, Chandigarh, has issued an orange alert for both states, forecasting a heat wave to severe heat wave at a few places on April 9 and 10.
On Tuesday, Bathinda in Punjab recorded the highest temperature at 43.1°C and Sirsa in Haryana followed closely at 42.8°C — both significantly above normal. The Met predicts warm nights in the region while, at the same time, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds up to 30-40 kmph at isolated places in the coming three days will bring some respite.
The south-western parts of Punjab and the southern and western parts of Haryana remained the worst-affected areas, where temperature ranged from 40-42°C.
The Met predicts dry weather across Punjab for the next 24 hours, while Haryana and Chandigarh will see similar conditions for the next 48 hours.
During this period, temperatures across Punjab and Haryana, except for northern parts, are expected to remain above 40°C.
The southern and western regions of both states will continue to bear the brunt of extreme heat, with temperatures persisting in the range of 40-42°C over the next two days.
Although no major drop in temperature is expected immediately, the Met predicts a decline of 2-4°C later in the week.
However, some respite is expected as light to moderate rainfall is predicted at isolated places in Punjab on April 9, 10 and 11, while in Haryana and Chandigarh on April 10 and 11.
Weathermen have also predicted thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) in this region on April 9, 10 and 11, accompanying the rain, offering some relief from the relentless heat.
Authorities have urged people to remain indoors during peak hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions.
