Residents of Chandigarh will soon be able to breeze from the city to the airport, with the Punjab government on Monday giving its in-principle approval for construction of a shorter alternate route.

The new route, which will cut the distance from Junction 63 in Chandigarh to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport (located in Mohali) by as much as 8 kilometres, has been chalked out after consultation with all stakeholders.

At present, residents have to travel at least 11.5 km to reach the airport from Junction 63 (T-Point of Vikas Marg and Purv Marg).

After the new route is constructed, the same stretch will only be 3.5 km.

As per details, for more than three years, the Chandigarh administration had been deliberating on developing a shorter, alternate route to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport.

An official said that the alternate route has been prepared after consultation of all the stakeholders — Punjab Government, Ministry of Defence, Airforce authorities, Chandigarh International Airport Ltd, and Ministry of Railways.

The Punjab government on Monday gave its nod for acquiring land falling in their jurisdiction, with officials stating that the in-principle approval from all other stakeholders had already been obtained by the UT administration.

An official in the knowhow of things said that a total of 54 square kilometres of land has to be acquired for construction of the alternate route. Of this, at least 14 kilometres fell in the jurisdiction of the state of Punjab for which approval was pending for years.

“Punjab will now begin the acquisition of land on its side,” the official added.

“The new route will start around 200 metres before the T-point intersection of Vikas Marg (coming from Sector-43 ISBT) and Purv Marg (coming from Tribune Chowk). There is a
railway bridge on the stretch and an underpass will be constructed under it. The entire
distance to the airport will be around 3.5 km, thereby reducing travel time,” a senior Chandigarh administration official said.

Nod to transfer Defence land

The President of India had earlier also granted permission to the Union Territory of Chandigarh for permanent transfer of Defence land at the airport.

The Ministry of Defence had sent a communication to the Chief of Air Staff and the Director-General Defence Estates on grant of working permission to the international airport for the construction of the alternative route and the No-Objection Certificate to construct the road within 100 metres from the boundary of a defence installation.
