The Punjab cabinet today rejected the proposal of allowing land pooling for the acquisition of land in Sector 76 to 80 by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA).
The issue, which came up for discussion during a cabinet meet today, was rejected by the cabinet on the plea that if pooling of land was allowed with retrospective effect,it would make the government liable to pay compensation of Rs 45,000 crore.
It is estimated that if this is allowed,in Mohali alone, the government would have to give additional compensation of Rs 4,500 crore.
On Wednesday, the government will file an affidavit in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in this regard.
The farmers whose land was acquired in 2003 to develop Sectors 76 to 80 by GMADA are asking the government to extend the current policy on acquisition to them as well.
In the last cabinet meeting also no decision was taken on this issue and was deferred for the todays cabinet meet.
In the last meeting, the cabinet failed to reach a consensus and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had deferred the issue till the matter was studied in detail.
