The Punjab government has ordered the district education officers (DEOs) across the state to ensure that the weight of the school bags should not be more than 10 per cent of the child’s body weight.
In an order issued Monday, the Punjab State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) directed the officers to ensure the bags weight for Classes 1 and 2 students must not be more than 2.2 kgs. The order also directed that pre-primary students should not carry the bags at all.
Similarly, the bags should not weigh more than 2.5 kg for Classes 3 to 5 students, for Classes 6 and 7 not more than 3 kg, and for Class 8 not more than 4 kg.
For Classes 9 and 10 students the bags should not weigh more that 4.5 kg, and for Classes 11 and 12 the bags should not weigh more than 5 kg.
The order also said, “Children should not be told to bring anything from home except books and notebooks. They should be counselled to prepare bags as per daily time-table. Counsel them on the right way to carry bags. They should avoid hanging the bag on one shoulder. Primary schools can consider keeping books and stationery in the schools itself.”
