Panjab University (PU) Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Arun Kumar Grover has congratulated Professor C N R Rao,the eminent scientist who has been selected for Bharat Ratna,the countrys highest civilian honour along with cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.
Bharat Ratna is given in recognition of exceptional service of the highest order to the country. The award has been announced after a gap of four years with Hindustani music doyen Bhimsen Joshi being the last recipient in 2009.
A well recognised international authority on solid state and materials chemistry,Professor Rao (89) currently serves as the Head of the Scientific Advisory Council to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He has also published over 1,400 research papers and 45 books. With the announcement,he has also become the third scientist after C V Raman and former President APJ Abdul Kalam to be given the honour.
Professor Rao was conferred with Doctor of Science degree (honoris causa) at the varsitys 60th convocation held in February 2011.

Recalling the association of the varsity with him,Professor Grover said the announcement is a matter of honour for the scientific fraternity and the entire varsity. The honour is a befitting recognition of Professor Raos services and contribution to the country. It will also motivate the students,researchers and scientists in a big way, Professor Grover said.
Rao to visit PU in March
Chandigarh: Professor CNR Rao is slated to visit PU on March 2,2014 to inaugurate the International Conference on Nano Science and Nano Technology,which will be hosted by Institute of Nano Science & Technology at PU. Several Chandigarh Region Innovation & Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) institutions will also be participating in the conference. Director,Institute of Nano Science & Technology,Mohali,Professor AK Ganguly also congratulated Professor Rao,saying that it a great honour for all the scientists in the country. Professor Rao had laid the foundation stone of the Nano Science Institute in Mohali.
