Two days after a Panjab University student, who was accused of sexual assault, was granted bail by a US court, the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) washed its hands of the incident on Thursday. It denied sending any delegation from the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) to Harvard to attend a seminar.

PUCSC president Amit Bhatia said,“Students had gone on their own. We have no role to play in this. They must have got information about the event from the Internet or other sources.”

PUCSC members also alleged the varsity did not have a proper scrutinising system due to which “less deserving” students were representing the varsity at the international seminar.

Condemning the incident,Bhatia said,“We have asked the varsity to probe how these students got the permission to participate in the event. A proper selection committee, comprising senior professors, should be formed so that such incidents do not occur in the future.”

A final year student of UILS was granted bail after he furnished an amount of $5,000 in a US court on Tuesday.

A British national had lodged a complaint against him for outraging her modesty in Boston, where the ULIS student had gone to attend a seminar being held at Harvard University.
