“There has always been a gap in the perception and reality about Panjab University (PU) ever since its inception in 1882,but it has always remained a doyen of excellence,” said former PU vice-chancellor,Professor R P Bambah, while delivering the valedictory address for the national seminar on the ‘Making of Modern Punjab: Education,Science and Social Change in Punjab c.1850 -2000’ in the varsity on Saturday.

Highlighting that it is not surprising that the varsity has been ranked first in the country,Professor Bambah said PU has produced three Prime Ministers for the country, two noble laureates, various noted writers like Amrita Pritam,Faiz Ahmed Faiz,Manto,K L Sehgal,Amrita Shergill, artists like Prithvi Raj Kapoor and noted scientists like Raj Mohanty,D P Sharma,S S Bhatnagar,Bhai Man Singh,M R Sahani,P S Gill,Satish Dhawan,Hansraj Gupta,S R Kashyap,A C Joshi,Birbal Sahni,M S Randhawa and P N Mehra.

Exhorting the decision making bodies to realise the need to adopt imaginative thinking and capacity building,Professor Bambah said that PU has the capacity to rise to the occasion of becoming one of the leading universities in the world.

Speaking on the occasion,Professor Bambah also highlighted that elitist education in any form is dangerous for society.

“There is an immediate need to strike a balance for fundamental knowledge in which a core role is played by interaction and dialogue. No university grows in isolation and linkages among educational institutions could break inertia,as well as the isolation,” he said.

“Moreover,industry-institution collaboration will bring the much needed financial resources for the universities and knowledge bank for the industry,” Professor Bambah added.

Highlighting that Panjab University had made a significant contribution in the key areas of defence and space and has the potential to lead in many more areas,he added that institutions are built by its alumni, who return to the institutions and contribute to the academic life and form bridges with the world outside.
