The members of Bharatiya Janata Party were canecharged and water cannons fired as they held a protest against CBI DIG Mahesh Aggarwal demanding his ouster. Senior BJP leader Harmohan Dhawan who was leading the protest suffered injuries and was taken to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16. He was discharged after being administered first aid.

The BJP has alleged that Aggarwal favoured Vijay Singla, the nephew of local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal,by informing about the CBI raid in advance. Due to this, important documents and other items went missing. Singla was arrested on May 3 on charges of accepting a bribe from a member of the Railway Board.

The BJP members gathered outside CBI office in Sector 30 and raised slogans against the CBI as well as the Congress. Barricades had been placed on the road in front of the CBI office. A CBI Inspector in an affidavit filed in CAT has stated that Aggarwal leaked information about the raid to facilitate Singla.

As the BJP members tried crossing the barricades, water cannons were fired. Among other leaders,Dhawan was also hit by a water cannon. Losing balance,he fell and suffered injuries. Dhawan said they were protesting peacefully outside the CBI office when the police canecharged them.

“We are demanding that DIG Mahesh Aggarwal resign from his post. He has favoured the nephew of Pawan Bansal by informing about the raid. We were holding a protest against this and demanding that he resign. However, the police used force against us,” said Dhawan.

He was taken to GMSH-16 where he received treatment and was discharged. The BJP leaders visited the hospital to enquire after him, causing chaos in the hospital. Due to the crowd that visited the hospital, the patients were affected. The entrance to the emergency was choked for some time. The movement of ambulances was also hampered. Police deployment outside the hospital was increased. Barricades were placed on the road leading to the hospital.

Meanwhile, division within the BJP was evident with no other senior BJP leader accompanying Dhawan. Neither party president Sanjay Tandon nor former MP Satya Pal Jain were part of the protest. The BJP had earlier also held a protest outside the CBI office, demanding Aggarwal’s resignation.

The allegations

In an application filed by Balbir Singh,an Inspector with the CBI,he has levelled serious allegations against Deputy Inspector General of Police,CBI,Mahesh Aggarwal. Following are the accusations:

*On February 13,Rajiv Gupta, the MC Joint commissioner, was allegedly let off by the DIG in a trap case against an MC Patwari in which Gupta’s name had surfaced. In order to allegedly save the Joint Commissioner, the DIG had himself prepared a report of the trap.

*On May 3,the DIG allegedly delayed the raid in the railway bribery case at the residence of Vijay Singla in order to help the family (Singla’s wife) to destroy all the evidence.

*Transferred only because he refused to comply with Aggarwal’s directions to help Rajiv Gupta, because he refused to succumb under pressure exerted on him by the senior officer.

Balbir Singh has also raised a question mark on his transfer which was ordered in 2008. He contended that his transfer was ordered even before he completed a minimum of three years in Chandigarh.
