The proposed rail underbridge at Manimajra has hit another hurdle with a number of pipelines being present at the site. The Public Health Department has expressed its inability to shift these pipelines and has suggested that some alternative should be looked into.
The rail underbridge was proposed to be constructed at the level crossing at Manimajra. After encountering several roadblocks, the project received approval of the Centre. As is the practice, the UT Architecture Department had sought clearances from all departments concerned. The clearance is obtained to ensure that there are no hindrances to starting construction at the site, including presence of wires and pipelines.
The Public Health Department of the Municipal Corporation,in a communication, has stated that there are eight pipelines at the site. These include pipelines for water supply, storm water drainage and sewerage. It is said that the pipelines cannot be shifted from the site,so there is a need to find some alternatives.
Chief Engineer,Municipal Corporation,S S Bida says,A total of eight pipelines are present at the site and it would be difficult to shift these. A communication has been sent to the Architecture Department concerning this. The pipelines are for water supply, sewerage and storm water drainage.
The rail underbridge was approved two years back with the crossing being a traffic bottleneck. Frequent traffic jams are witnessed at the crossing. After inspection of the site, the experts had said that the proximity of the Modern Housing Complex and a market to the site would prove a hindrance to construction of the underbridge. The apprehension was that the foundations of the buildings could get affected.
Thereafter,it was decided that the design of the underbridge would be modified. A narrower underbridge was then proposed. When the comments of the departments were sought, the Public Health Department raised objections. An official said alternatives would be required to be explored. One of the options could be that instead of the underbridge,an overbridge could be looked into. However, that would require another extensive exercise. There have been projects in the past which could not take off as pipelines or wires proved to be a hindrance.
Underbridge at Mauli Jagran to be operational by March
An underbridge that was under construction at Mauli Jagran is likely to be operational by March next year. The underbridge is being constructed with a unique design wherein separate lanes have been constructed for the non-motorised vehicles. In these lanes, the slope would be less than the other lane so that less effort is required in plying the vehicle.
