A meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee of Municipal Corporation would be held on Friday to discuss the issue of making some parking lots in Sector 17 vehicle-free in the evening. This follows a proposal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The civic body would study the feasibility of making the parking lots vehicle-free.
More than 6,000 vehicles can be parked in Sector 17. In case two or more paid parking lots are made vehicle-free,there will be a need for making alternate arrangements for parking the vehicles. The need for having alternate system for transportation of the residents would also have to be considered.
In order to work out the modalities of the proposal, members of the Finance and Contract Committee would hold a discussion. Sector 17 is the commercial hub of the city and witnesses heavy vehicular traffic. During evenings,it is a nightmare to find a space to park. While proposals for making the sector vehicle-free have been mooted time and again,in wake of the increasing rush, these have not been implemented. The proposal entails construction of four multilevel parking lots in each corner of the sector. The aim is that vehicles are parked at the entrance of the sector. From here battery-operated vehicles could be provided for commuting. The construction of another overbridge is being done for the implementation of this plan.
The first multilevel parking lot is yet to take off. The councillors and officials will hold a discussion on its feasibility.
