Prof Jagat Ram,of Advanced Eye Centre,PGIMER,has won ‘Best of the Best Award’ in the category of ‘new techniques for surgical video in ophthalmology’ organised by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Conference in San Francisco on April 22.

The chairman of the jury,Dr Spencer Thorton, presented the award and described this new technique as a miracle to happen in the field of ophthalmology.

Prof Ram has designed a special intraocular lens which could be placed safely in a child with two lenses in the same eye. This new surgical technique to implant this uniquely designed intraocular lens was demonstrated for the first time in the world. The technique has opened a new option for the management of difficult cases of cataract in children.

“Two years ago,I successfully operated on a child whose right eye had double (conjoined) corneas/two crystalline lenses side by side, one and half times bigger eye,no central lens. I designed a special intraocular lens for the child. The main challenge was designing of the lens and then the successful surgical implantation,” Prof Ram said.

He added,“It was the first-of-its-kind operation in the world. Such a defect has never been seen in the world. The new technique for double lenses can be used for similar eye problems in infants like crystalline lens, eyes bigger in size, two capsules and many more defects, which were earlier left untreated.”

More than 10,000 ophthalmologists from over 120 countries participated in the function.
