Open skies and sunshine have brought back some degree of sheen to the otherwise tardy procurement process at the grain markets in Moga district.
Moga, along with Sangrur and Barnala districts, was witnessing distress sale of paddy due to poor quality harvest plagued by high moisture content.
Moga Deputy Commissioner Dr Vijay N Zade said: With the sun shining bright for the last couple of days, paddy procurement has picked up at many grain markets in our area. The paddy coming in now is dry.
According to the figures available till Saturday evening, grain markets in Moga had received some 7.16 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of paddy,of which 6.52 lakh MT had been procured. While the FCI procured 1,627 MT,PUNGRAIN lifted 2,03,535 MT,MARKFED 1,54,914 MT,PUNSUP 1,38,005 MT,Punjab Warehousing 84,377 MT and Punjab Agro 63,770 MT of paddy.
Dr Zade added: We are monitoring the procurement process round the clock and will ensure that the lifting picks up fast. In the next 72 hours, the mandis will be cleared as new storage space has been identified and this has eased pressure on the mandis. At the same time,we have cleared 95 per cent of payments due towards the farmers.
