Police in Panchkula Monday wrote to the Directorate of Mines and Geology, requesting deployment of survey teams to check whether mining operators are extracting minerals within approved lease boundaries and in accordance with sanctioned plans.

This comes after police seized 17 trucks, one JCB earthmover and two tractor-trolleys transporting illegally mined materials, between November 22 and 29. Police said all the seized vehicles were handed over to the mining department for further legal action.

Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta said on Monday the request for survey teams was to ensure transparency and compliance in mining practices across the district. “Our objective is to ensure that mining takes place strictly as per the approved plans and lease boundaries.”

The DCP also said the district police have adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal mining. Sensitive zones were placed under constant CCTV surveillance, she said. Teams are conducting surprise raids regularly and commando teams along with flying squads remain on 24×7 alert to intercept any suspicious vehicle near mining sites.

Police Commissioner Shibas Kabiraj said that illegal mining poses serious environmental risks and harms natural resources. He said Panchkula police remain committed to protecting the environment and ensuring a safer, sustainable future for the district.
