Police release 2 sketches of accused in cash van robbery

According to the police, the number was fake and the vehicle is yet to be traced.

The police on Tuesday released two sketches of one of the four accused in the cash van robbery in which Rs 1.68 crore were looted on the Siswan-Baddi road on Monday. Both the sketches show front profiles of the same person.

Around 11 am on Monday, four people — three of whom were wearing police uniforms — looted a CMS (Cash Management Services) cash van that was to refill the Axis bank ATMs in Barotiwala-Baddi region. The two sketches are based on the description given by the four victims who were looted at gunpoint after being sprayed with chilli and pepper powder.

The police have despatched 12 teams to Haryana,Himachal Pradesh and Punjab in search of the accused. “We have sent 12 teams to the three states. The police have been digging the past CIA records and will be zeroing in on some gangs as well,” said Rajbir Deswal,Commissioner of Police,Ambala-Panchkula. “As per our investigations, the robbers have taken shelter in Punjab and we are in constant touch with the Punjab Police. We have also recovered some CCTV footage that could be vital in the investigation.”

The police had earlier questioned the four occupants of the CMS van. Following their conflicting statements, the police grew suspicious of their role but have not gathered anything against them so far. “We have taken their cell phones and are trying to track their previous locations and phone calls. Till now, nothing substantial that points to their involvement has come out,” said a senior police officer.

Suraj Sangam, the cash box in-charge,Neem Pal,the driver,Gulshan and Yashpal, the two security guards, were allegedly looted by four men impersonating as police officers on the Siswan-Baddi road around 11.30 am on Monday. The cash van occupants were stopped by the robbers dressed as cops on the pretext of checking their licence and vehicle documents. Later, the robbers fled away in a white Verna whose registration number ended with 7812. According to the police, the number was fake and the vehicle is yet to be traced.

As per the police, the robbers sprayed chilli and pepper powder into the eyes of the van occupants and took away the cash box which contained Rs 1.68 crore. The robbers were carrying a pistol and also took away the security guards’ two 12 bore short barell guns and the vehicle’s keys along with Neem Pal’s cell phone.

The incident had occurred near Tapriyana village of Nawa Nagar Gram Panchayat and is situated on the border of Punjab and Haryana. A dispute arose on the jurisdiction of the spot between Panchkula and Mohali Police on Monday. After around four hours,it was concluded that it fell under the Pinjore Police Station and a case was registered there.

Chairman of the Zila Parishad Rajesh Kona on Tuesday urged the district administration to increase police force at the Madhawalan police post. The Madhawalan post is the closest police post to the crime spot that falls under the Pinjore Police jurisdiction.
